The municipality of Vila Franca do Campo is situated in the centre/ south part of the island of São Miguel, bordered by the municipalities of Povoação (Northeast), Ribeira Grande (North) and Lagoa (Southwest).

With exception to the Vila’s surrounding area, this municipality is quiet bumpy.  Pico de Barroso (947m) is its highest point. This elevation begins on the shore of one of the most important lakes of the Azores: the “Lagoa do Fogo” – Lake of Fire.

The municipality is crossed by numerous water paths throughout its parishes. Ribeira da Praia is the most important one because of its landscape value and for its hydroelectric and tourism potential.
