The municipality of Ponta Delgada has an area of 231,89 Km2 and is situated at the extreme southwest part of São Miguel Island.
The city of Ponta Delgada is the main metropolis of the Azores and has many touristic, cultural and patrimonial attractions. The municipality’s surface is quite mountainous, culminating at the massif of Sete Cidades, with 856m, where one can find some of the most beautiful lakes of the Azores; the Sete Cidades lakes, the Canário lake, the Carvão lake and Rasa lake. The coastline is formed by cliffs and rocky shoal. There are some dark sand beaches with excellent conditions to practice nautical sports, to bathe or simply to enjoy the sandy shore. Almost all of the municipality’s landscape has been explored by man, for agriculture or for raising cattle. These activities mark the scenery with big surfaces of green pasturages and woods of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria Japonica). |
