 São Miguel is located in the archipelago of the Azores, about 1500 km from Lisbon and about 3900 km from New York, 25º 30' longitude West and 37º 50 latitude North
With an area of 759,41km2, the island is 65 km long and 14 km at the widest point. It is part of the Eastern Group with Santa Maria 55 km to the South.
Also known as the Green Island, its landscape is composed by an abundance of pasture and forest covered peaks that are exposed almost the whole year to high air humidity. The island’s contoured slopes and lakes on the top of extinct volcanoes surprise the unaware visitor. The climate is temperate with median temperatures of 12º C (54º F) in the winter and 24º C (76º F) in the summer. |
